Birmingham Airport Disrupted by Lufthansa Pilot Strike
Seven flights have been cancelled at Birmingham Airport today, Tuesday 14 April 2026, as pilots from Germany's flagship carrier Lufthansa embark on a 48-hour strike. This industrial action, which began on Monday 13 April, marks the fourth strike at the airline in 2026, primarily affecting major hubs like Frankfurt and Munich with hundreds of cancellations.
Pay Disputes and Pension Scheme Issues
The pilots' strike centres on ongoing pay disputes, including disagreements over the company pension scheme and remuneration at the regional subsidiary CityLine. Lufthansa has stated on its website that it is working intensively to minimise the impact on passengers by operating as many flights as possible through other airlines within the Lufthansa Group and partner airlines.
Additionally, the airline has advised passengers with cancelled flights that they can exchange their tickets for Deutsche Bahn rail tickets to facilitate alternative travel arrangements.
Cabin Crew Strike to Follow Immediately
In a further escalation, the UFO trade union announced on Monday evening that cabin crew members will strike immediately after the pilots return to work. This new strike is scheduled to last for two days, starting at midnight on Wednesday and running until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday.
As a result, Lufthansa could face four consecutive days of disruptions, compounding travel woes for passengers. The back-to-back strikes highlight significant labour tensions within the airline, potentially leading to extended flight cancellations and delays.
