Birmingham Airport Cancels All Middle East Flights Amid Regional Conflict
All Middle East-bound flights from Birmingham Airport have been cancelled on Saturday, March 14, 2026, as the escalating war between Iran, Israel, and the United States continues to disrupt air travel across the Gulf region. The cancellations affect both departures and arrivals at BHX, creating significant disruption for passengers and airlines alike.
Airlines Impacted by the Cancellations
The airlines directly impacted by Saturday's cancellations include Qatar Airways and Emirates, with specific flights to Doha and Dubai being called off. Earlier in the week, Lufthansa had also experienced cancellations due to a staff strike, but that European-based carrier has since resumed normal operations. Unfortunately, for passengers traveling to the Middle East, multiple services remain grounded and will not operate as scheduled.
Aviation Experts Analyze the Travel Chaos
According to aviation analyst John Grant, the Gulf corridor has been thrown into complete chaos by the recent attacks in Iran. On a typical day, approximately 70 percent of Abu Dhabi's Zayed airport's 55,000 passengers would be transiting through the hub, but current conditions have severely disrupted these patterns. Grant also noted that a far greater proportion of Dubai's 175,000 daily passengers, about 55 percent, remain in a city where tourism has previously boomed, with many travelers potentially extending stopover stays due to the uncertainty.
Another aviation expert, Andrew Charlton, emphasized the long-term implications of the ongoing conflict. "The longer it goes, the more people's travel expectations are going to be changed," Charlton stated. "Passengers are going to have to find other ways to get around, and destination selections are going to be altered significantly." He added that most European carriers had already abandoned routes to Asia, raising questions about how quickly airlines can adapt to the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
Potential Shifts in Airline Traffic Patterns
Charlton also speculated about potential opportunities for African carriers like Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways if air traffic patterns shift from east-west to north-south routes. However, he expressed confidence in Emirates' ability to recover from the current crisis. "The old-time airline guy in me says Emirates will get their traffic back," Charlton remarked. "They'll offer cheap tickets, and it's never failed in the past – it got everyone back to flying after the Covid pandemic. Then they ramped up the ticket prices, and we still traveled."
