Birmingham Airport Flights Cancelled Amid Lufthansa Strike Action

Seven flights at Birmingham Airport have been cancelled on Tuesday, April 14, as a result of ongoing strike action by Lufthansa pilots in Germany. This disruption is part of a wider wave of industrial action that is grounding planes and cancelling flights across the European Union, dealing a significant blow to holidaymakers and travelers during this period.

Strike Details and Union Dispute

The strike was called by the Union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), representing Lufthansa pilots, following unresolved pension disputes. According to Reuters, the union stated that Lufthansa had failed to present an acceptable offer in collective bargaining negotiations.

Andreas Pinheiro, president of Union VC, explained the decision, saying, "The Cockpit union feels compelled to take this step after the employer’s side showed no real willingness to reach a solution in several collective bargaining disputes. Despite our deliberate decision not to take strike action over the Easter holidays, no serious offers have been made."

Lufthansa's Response and Passenger Impact

Lufthansa responded to the strike announcement by labeling it a "new level of escalation" and describing the union's demands as "absurd and unachievable." The airline emphasized its efforts to mitigate the impact on passengers.

In a statement, Lufthansa said, "Lufthansa and Eurowings are working intensively to keep the impact on passengers as low as possible. We are trying to have as many flights as possible operated by other airlines within the Lufthansa Group and by partner airlines. However, despite these efforts, flight cancellations are unavoidable."

The airline advised affected travelers to check their flight status before traveling and apologized for the inconvenience, citing the "disproportionate and very short-notice strike announcement."
