Birmingham Airport named most stressful in UK by Trustpilot review analysis
Birmingham Airport named most stressful in UK

Birmingham Airport has been identified as the most stressful airport in the United Kingdom, according to new research by aerospace tooling supplier Heamar. The study analysed thousands of Trustpilot reviews, counting keywords such as “chaotic,” “stressful,” “confused” and “disorganised” to rank airports by passenger stress levels.

Research methodology and findings

Heamar examined the frequency of stress-related terms per 1,000 Trustpilot reviews for each airport. Birmingham Airport recorded the highest score, with stress-related keywords appearing in 8.79% of all reviews analysed. The airport currently holds a 1.3 out of five rating on Trustpilot.

The full list of the UK’s five most stressful airports, as measured by stress-related keyword matches per 1,000 Trustpilot reviews, is as follows: Birmingham Airport scored 87.89, London Luton Airport scored 66.13, Bristol Airport scored 55.77, London Heathrow Airport scored 45.38, and London Gatwick Airport scored 44.75.

Airport response and recent passenger accounts

A Birmingham Airport spokesperson responded to the study, stating: “At Birmingham Airport, we focus on feedback from passengers who have travelled through our terminal recently. The research includes reviews made four years ago and would not reflect the significant changes made at the airport or be accurate in passenger experience today.”

Despite the airport’s assertion that older reviews skew the data, several passengers have posted negative reviews in recent weeks. One recent passenger recounted: “After landing, we were left sitting on the aircraft for over 15 minutes because there was nobody available to connect the steps and no buses to take passengers to the terminal. It was particularly frustrating to hear the captain come on and essentially say that this was ‘just another typical day at Birmingham Airport’.”

Another recent reviewer described the airport as “total chaos, poor signage, long queues going through Security. A totally shocking experience.”

Mixed reviews on other platforms

Birmingham Airport fares better on Google reviews, where it holds a 3.4-star rating out of five. Some recent reviews have defended the airport. One passenger described it as a “very good Airport [with] easy access.” Another three-star reviewer noted: “The airport isn’t huge, which is nice, but the signage is lacking. We had a little trouble finding our way around. The waiting times were reasonable and the staff were quite welcoming.”

The Heamar study analysed Trustpilot reviews exclusively, which may not capture the full range of passenger experiences. The airport’s spokesperson emphasised that recent operational improvements have not been reflected in the older reviews included in the research.
