Birmingham Airport has issued a reminder to passengers about the security rules they must follow when passing through the airport. In a new social media campaign, the airport shared a step-by-step guide to help travellers prepare for security checks and make their journey smoother.
What is the PREPARE acronym?
The guide is built around the acronym PREPARE, which stands for Passport & boarding pass, Remove, Electronics & batteries, Pockets, At the Ready, Ready to scan?, and Exit. The airport's Security Duty Manager, Beth, explained each step in a video posted on Instagram.
Step-by-step breakdown
Passport & boarding pass: Beth advises passengers to ensure their passport and boarding pass are either inside their bag or placed in a tray. For those with printed boarding passes, they should be ready for inspection.
Remove: Travellers must take off their coat, jacket, and smartwatch. They may also be asked to remove belts and shoes. The airport provides foot covers upon request. Liquids up to two litres are permitted in hand luggage, but metal or double-walled bottles must be empty before reaching security.
Electronics & batteries: Laptops, tablets, and mobile phones can remain inside hand luggage during security checks. Chargers should be packed in carry-on baggage. Lithium batteries and power banks are not allowed in hold luggage and must be carried in hand luggage, complying with airline size limits. Larger battery packs may require airline approval.
Pockets: All pocket contents, such as keys, tissues, and coins, should be emptied into a tray.
At the Ready: Items should be arranged in trays for the next step.
Ready to scan?: Once ready, passengers push their trays onto the belt and move straight into the scanner.
Exit: After being scanned, travellers should move their trays to the repacking benches to keep the line moving.
