Liquid Rules at Birmingham and East Midlands Airports: Summer Travel Update
As summer approaches, many UK airports have updated their liquid restrictions, but the rules vary between Birmingham Airport and East Midlands Airport. Understanding these changes is crucial for smooth travel.
What Are the New Liquid Limits?
At most UK airports, the traditional rule requires liquids in containers of 100ml or less, placed in a transparent resealable plastic bag no larger than 20cm x 20cm, with a total capacity of one litre. This bag must be removed and screened separately at security checkpoints.
However, advancements in security technology have led to significant changes. Many major airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, and Edinburgh, have introduced new 3D CT scanners, allowing passengers to carry liquids up to two litres per container without removing them from their bags.
Birmingham Airport's Updated Policy
Birmingham Airport is among those that have scrapped the 100ml liquid limit. Passengers flying outbound from Birmingham can now bring liquids up to two litres per container in their hand luggage. There is no need to place liquids in plastic bags or remove them at security. Additionally, laptops and other electronic devices can remain in bags during screening.
It is important to note that this policy applies only to outbound flights from Birmingham. For return flights, rules may differ depending on the airport of departure, as some locations still enforce the 100ml limit.
East Midlands Airport's Current Rules
In contrast, East Midlands Airport has recently issued an alert reminding passengers that the 100ml liquid limit remains in place. Travelers must ensure all liquids are under 100ml when passing through security. While liquids and large electrical items can be left inside bags, the traditional restrictions still apply at this hub.
