New EU Border System for UK Tourists from April 10: Full Details
UK holidaymakers planning trips to the European Union from April 10 have been issued a significant warning regarding upcoming changes to border procedures. A major new European Union border rule is set to take effect, which is expected to substantially increase waiting times at airports across the Schengen area.
Introduction of the Entry/Exit System (EES)
From April 10, the European Union will begin rolling out its new Entry/Exit System (EES) at airports throughout the Schengen zone. This comprehensive shake-up replaces the traditional passport stamping process for non-EU travellers with a digital biometric registration system.
The EES will be deployed gradually across the external borders of 29 European countries over a six-month period. These nations will introduce different elements of the system in phases, including the collection of biometric data such as facial images and fingerprints.
Potential for Airport Delays
Vykintas Maknickas, CEO at eSIM provider Saily, commented on the potential impact: "While the scheme is designed to modernise border controls and tighten security, the early days of the rollout could bring delays, especially at busy hubs such as Paris, Rome, Barcelona and Amsterdam."
Maknickas added: "Whenever a new airport system launches, there's a natural adjustment period. Spring is one of the busiest times for short haul travel into Europe. Travellers should allow extra time at arrival and be prepared for slightly slower border checks, particularly if it's their first visit under the new system. When procedures change, small delays can create stress, especially in unfamiliar airports."
Gradual Implementation and Current Procedures
During the initial implementation phase, travellers' biometric data might not be collected at every border crossing point immediately, and their personal information may not be registered in the system right away. Importantly, passports will continue to be stamped as usual during this transitional period.
Countries Affected by the New System
The 29 countries in the Schengen area that will implement the Entry/Exit System include:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Bulgaria
- Croatia
- Czechia
- Denmark
- Estonia
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Greece
- Hungary
- Iceland
- Italy
- Latvia
- Liechtenstein
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Malta
- Netherlands
- Norway
- Poland
- Portugal
- Romania
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
- Spain
- Sweden
- Switzerland
UK tourists are advised to plan accordingly and allow additional time for border procedures when travelling to any of these destinations from April 10 onward.
