A light aircraft has crashed into a hangar, triggering a massive fire at an airport in Australia. The incident occurred at Parafield Airport in the northern suburbs of Adelaide shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29. Police and emergency services were called to the area near Kings Road at 2:10 p.m. following reports that the aircraft came down during an attempted landing, according to officials.
Evacuations and Emergency Response
The surrounding area has been evacuated as emergency crews work to bring the situation under control. There has been no official confirmation yet regarding the number of people on board the aircraft or inside the building, reports the Daily Star. Dense clouds of black smoke are visible across the area, and local residents are being urged to stay indoors with all windows and doors firmly closed.
Witness Reports
Ben, a radio listener who was near the airport, reported: "It looks like a large fire in an aeroplane hangar. I've seen multiple fire trucks going through - this is probably the fifth one now, and multiple emergency services heading out there." He added: "It's pretty big. You could see the gable in the front doors of the hangar billowing out black smoke, just coming out. Couldn't see flames but it was quite large - you could see some sort of fuel."
Airport Closure
An airport spokesperson confirmed the incident in an official statement. "Parafield Airport has been closed to all air traffic," the statement read. "We will provide full support to the emergency services in their response to this incident." The airport remains closed as investigations continue.
