Stansted Airport Implements Sharp Rise in Passenger Drop-Off Fees
Drivers using Stansted Airport for passenger drop-offs are now facing substantially higher charges following a recent price adjustment. The airport has increased the fees for dropping off travellers at its terminals, with costs now significantly elevated compared to previous rates.
New Fee Structure Details
Under the new pricing scheme, stops lasting 15 minutes or more will incur a charge of £28. For shorter visits under 15 minutes, the fee has been set at £10, representing a £3 increase from earlier charges. Additionally, drivers who remain in the terminal area for over 30 minutes will be subject to a £100 Parking Charge Notice, though this penalty can be reduced to £60 if settled within a 14-day period.
There is also a £28 fee for re-entering the car park within 30 minutes of initially accessing it. However, Blue Badge holders are completely exempt from all these charges, maintaining free access for disabled drivers.
Airport's Rationale for the Increase
A spokesperson for Stansted Airport explained that the fee adjustments are designed to manage congestion at the terminal and reduce 'kiss and fly' traffic, which is identified as a major contributor to road congestion around the airport. The spokesperson further noted that the airport is required under planning conditions to ensure that at least 50 per cent of passengers access the airport by public transport.
This public transport usage threshold is expected to rise to 54 per cent as passenger numbers increase. The airport continues to provide a free park and ride facility for those willing to be dropped off and picked up further from the terminal, along with a discount scheme for local residents living within 10 miles of the airport.
Broader Context of Airport Fee Increases
This move by Stansted Airport follows similar price rises for drop-off parking at other major UK airports. In December, London Heathrow increased its drop-off charges from £6 to £7, while using the same service at Gatwick Airport costs drivers £10. These adjustments reflect a growing trend among UK airports to implement higher fees to discourage private vehicle use and alleviate congestion issues.
The increased charges at Stansted are part of a broader strategy to enhance traffic flow and promote sustainable transport options, aligning with environmental and operational goals across the aviation sector.
