TUI Issues Critical Travel Update Amid Middle East Conflict

Airline and holiday company TUI has issued an urgent update to all passengers following the outbreak of war in the Middle East, which has caused significant travel disruptions across the region. The UK government has launched an unprecedented operation to support hundreds of thousands of British nationals in the Gulf as Iranian missile strikes continue to escalate tensions.

Flight Suspensions and Safety Measures

Flights to and from countries in the Middle East remain suspended as the conflict persists, according to major airlines. This follows a pre-emptive strike by US and Israeli forces against Iran on Saturday morning, aimed at countering nuclear weapon development, which prompted retaliatory missile attacks from Iran targeting Israel and other Middle Eastern nations.

In a new statement, TUI emphasized that they are closely monitoring the evolving situation and adhering to guidance from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). As of March 1st, the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain.

For customers currently in the UAE or Qatar, TUI stated: "The safety of our customers is our highest priority. The current advice from the FCDO is that individuals in the UAE and Qatar remain indoors and shelter in place as a precautionary measure. We kindly ask that you follow local guidance, remain in your hotel or accommodation, and avoid any non-essential travel."

Airline Responses and Passenger Guidance

TUI is working with airline partners to monitor the situation and arrange for the safe return of passengers to the UK once conditions permit. Due to airspace restrictions, flights to and from the UK have been impacted, with delays and cancellations expected. Passengers with bookings up to March 8th will be contacted by TUI's pre-travel team to discuss options.

Other airlines have also taken action:

  • Emirates: Temporarily suspended all operations to and from Dubai until 3pm UAE time on March 2nd, advising passengers to rebook or request refunds for travel before March 5th.
  • Etihad Airways: Suspended flights to and from Abu Dhabi until 2am UAE time on March 2nd, with disruptions expected. Passengers can request full refunds for travel up to March 3rd.
  • Qatar Airways: Flights remain suspended due to Qatari airspace closure, with updates to be provided. The airline warned of scammers impersonating staff online.
  • Virgin Atlantic: Canceled services between London Heathrow and Dubai, as well as London Heathrow and Riyadh on March 1st and 2nd, while avoiding Iraqi airspace.

According to aviation analytics company Cirium, 83 flights are still scheduled between the UK and the Middle East on Sunday, but the situation remains fluid.

UK Government Advice for British Nationals

The FCDO has advised British nationals in Bahrain, Israel, Palestine, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates to register their presence with the UK government to receive direct updates. In a statement on X, the FCDO urged: "You should continue to follow travel advice and the advice of the local authorities."

An additional update on Sunday afternoon advised British nationals in Duqm, Oman, to immediately shelter in place, while those in Salalah should leave as soon as possible if commercial means allow. The FCDO emphasized: "Remain indoors in a secure location, avoid all travel, and follow instructions from the local authorities."

Passengers are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and exercise patience due to high call volumes and potential last-minute changes.
