UK Passengers Warned of Two Country Border Closures

Foreign Office Issues Urgent Travel Alert for UK Passengers

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has released a critical update warning UK passengers about significant border closures in two countries. This development comes amid ongoing regional tensions involving Iran and the United States, impacting airspace and land crossings.

Specific Border Closures Announced

According to official FCDO guidance published on its "Warnings and insurance" and "Entry requirements" pages, the border crossing from Iraq into Kuwait is now closed. British nationals attempting to enter Kuwait must contact the British Embassy in Kuwait at least 24 hours in advance. The embassy will then share names and passport details with Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will make the final decision on entry.

Alternative Travel Routes Available

For those deemed safe to leave Kuwait, the FCDO has confirmed that certain land border crossings into Saudi Arabia remain open as of March 3. These include the Al Salmi / Ar–Ruqi and Al Nuwaisib / Al-Khafji crossings. However, travelers are strongly advised to review the travel advice for Saudi Arabia and ensure all necessary paperwork is in order to avoid being denied entry. Additionally, if traveling by car, the vehicle must be fully owned and registered in the traveler's name.

Essential Travel Precautions

The FCDO emphasizes several key precautions for UK passengers:

  • Check for the latest updates from airlines or tour operators regarding commercial departure options.
  • Follow instructions from local authorities and verify the status of border crossings before traveling.
  • Ensure access to emergency supplies and essential medications.
  • Keep departure plans under constant review and maintain up-to-date travel documents, including any required visas for onward travel.

Important Note: Travel within or out of Kuwait is considered to be at the individual's own risk, given the current geopolitical climate.

Broader Regional Context

This travel warning coincides with escalating tensions in the region, which have also affected other areas. For instance, there have been calls to postpone Iraq's upcoming World Cup play-off decider scheduled for March 31 in Monterrey, Mexico, due to the conflict. The match, against either Bolivia or Suriname, determines qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The FCDO continues to monitor the situation closely and urges all UK nationals in the affected regions to stay informed through official channels and exercise extreme caution.
