Birmingham Airport is advising passengers travelling through departures today (Thursday, August 13) to stay hydrated as temperatures reach 36C. The Met Office has declared an amber heat alert for the region, with warnings that temperatures could climb to 38C in Birmingham and surrounding areas.
The airport shared a video on social media with essential advice for navigating security in the heat. Officials emphasised the importance of keeping hydrated for both travellers and their companions.
Liquids policy and free refill points
Passengers are reminded that they can carry up to two litres of liquid through security. The airport encourages travellers to fill reusable bottles before heading to security, with a water fountain located opposite Spar in the terminal. Alternatively, bottles can be purchased at landside stores.
However, double-walled bottles must be emptied before security, as they will be checked for any hidden liquids. After passing security, passengers can refill their bottles for free at gate 49G, at Chilly's machines in gates 1 to 20, or at another machine in the departure lounge next to the Assisted Travel Desk. All food and beverage outlets are also happy to top up bottles.
Staying cool in the heat
The airport also reminded passengers that handheld fans are permitted in hand luggage, offering a practical way to stay cool while travelling. With the amber alert in place, these measures aim to help passengers avoid heat-related issues during their journey.
