Chiltern Railways has advised customers to travel only if essential on Thursday 13 August, as extreme temperatures are expected to cause significant disruption across its network. The Met Office has forecast highs of 38C in parts of the Chiltern region, prompting the operator to introduce a reduced timetable between 11am and 8pm to maintain fleet reliability and passenger comfort.
Reduced timetable details
During the reduced timetable period, off-peak services between London Marylebone and Birmingham Moor Street will operate hourly. Some services between London Marylebone and Oxford will be cancelled, and no Chiltern Railways services will run from Birmingham Snow Hill from 10.15am until the end of the day. The Leamington Spa to Birmingham Moor Street shuttle service will not operate after 11am, and a small number of peak-time services on other routes will also be cancelled.
The operator said the reduced timetable will help keep services running safely and comfortably for customers during the hottest part of the day.
Ticket flexibility and refunds
Customers holding tickets for Thursday 13 August can use them on Wednesday 12, Friday 14, or Saturday 15 August instead. Those who no longer wish to travel can obtain a full fee-free refund from the point of purchase.

By operating a reduced timetable during the hottest part of the day, we can provide a more reliable and comfortable service for customers. If you do need to travel, please check your journey before setting out, allow extra time and carry water with you to stay hydrated."
Impact on passengers
The changes will affect thousands of passengers who use the Chiltern line for commuting and leisure travel. Birmingham Snow Hill, a key city-centre station, will be without train services for most of the day, leaving travellers to seek alternative transport. The operator advised customers to plan ahead and consider whether their journey is necessary.
Chiltern Railways will continue to monitor temperatures and adjust services as needed. Passengers are encouraged to check live departure information before travelling.
