The initiative, launched under Prime Minister Andy Burnham and introduced by former Chancellor Rachel Reeves, began on August 1 and runs until the end of August, according to the Department for Transport. The scheme allows children in the specified age range to travel free on most local bus services across England throughout the month.
Local councils and bus operators may have additional rules in place for the scheme. These could include requirements for proof of age, local travel cards, or accompanied travel for younger children. In some areas, the offer may also be extended beyond the five to 15 age range.
Exclusions and operator participation
Certain services are not covered by the scheme, including coach services, school-only services, and some airport services. Participation in the scheme is voluntary, meaning some operators may choose not to take part. If a route or operator is not listed, passengers should check with their bus operator or local council for information on alternative local offers, discounts, or concessions.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: “We’re giving families room to breathe from the cost-of-living squeeze. With free bus travel for 5 to 15-year olds and discounts on kids’ meals at restaurants, cinema tickets and theme parks, we’re helping people make the most of the time they have together for the school holidays.”
The scheme ends on August 31, and families are encouraged to check with their local operator or council for any remaining opportunities before the offer expires.
