Royal Mail delivery delays hit 30 West Midlands postcode areas

Royal Mail has issued a service alert causing delays for thousands of households and businesses across the West Midlands. As of Tuesday, July 14, 2026, 30 postcode areas in the region are affected, including Wolverhampton, Kidderminster, Lichfield, and Rugby. Nationwide, 216 locations are experiencing disruptions.

Affected West Midlands Postcodes

The following postcode areas in the West Midlands are impacted: Brierley Hill (DY5), Dudley (DY1-DY3), Kidderminster (DY10-DY12, DY14), Kingswinford (DY6), Lichfield (WS7, WS13, WS14), Nuneaton (CV10, CV11, CV13), Rugby (CV21, CV22, CV23), Stourbridge (DY7-DY9), Stourport-on-Severn (DY13), Tipton (DY4), Wolverhampton NE (WV11, WV12), and Wolverhampton NW (WV6-WV9).

Royal Mail's Response

Royal Mail stated: "We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. In a small number of local offices, this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors. In those cases, we will rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers." The company added that it provides targeted support to affected offices to restore service standards.

Performance and Penalties

Royal Mail has faced criticism for late deliveries in recent years. Ofcom fined the company £21 million in October for failing to meet delivery standards. In 2024-2025, Royal Mail delivered only 77% of First Class post and 92.5% of Second Class post on time. This year, Ofcom set a target of 90% of First Class Next Day deliveries arriving on schedule within 12 months.

Improvement Plans

Jamie Stephenson, Royal Mail's chief operating officer, said: "We're putting significant investment into improving reliability and reaching these new delivery targets, but delivering lasting change across a network of this scale takes time. Universal Service reform is a key part of that, helping us adapt the network to reflect how people send and receive mail today while protecting the one-price-goes-anywhere service for the future." He added that a new delivery model will be deployed to all delivery offices by the Christmas peak period, with quarterly targets.
