EDF Announces Major Extension of Off-Peak EV Charging Hours
Energy provider EDF has launched a significant new initiative for electric vehicle owners, extending off-peak charging hours across all its EV tariffs. The company confirmed that drivers will now benefit from an additional two hours of low-cost charging, creating a seven-hour window between 11pm and 6am.
Substantial Range Benefits for Commuters
According to EDF's data analysis, seven hours of off-peak charging could provide sufficient range for approximately twelve days of typical commuting. This represents a substantial improvement over previous offerings and positions EDF as the UK supplier with the longest off-peak charging window currently available on the market.
Drivers utilizing a standard 7kW home charger during this extended period could add between 140 and 210 miles to their vehicle's range overnight. Previously, off-peak hours were limited to the period between midnight and 5am, with charging costs typically remaining under £10 per session.
Grid Management and Environmental Advantages
Joe Souto, director of retail at EDF, emphasized the multiple benefits of this initiative. "We are pleased to offer extended off-peak hours across all our EV tariffs, making it simpler and more affordable to power their car and home every night," Souto stated.
"With seven hours of overnight charging, households can help reduce the strain on the grid by using electricity when it's less in demand, and wake up with a car fully charged easing the pressure of the morning routine."
The extended charging window encourages energy consumption during periods of lower demand, which helps balance the national grid while allowing customers to take advantage of cleaner electricity sources. This approach supports Britain's transition toward a more sustainable, electric future while providing tangible cost savings to consumers.
Complementary "Free Electricity" Sundays Initiative
In addition to the extended EV charging hours, EDF is introducing a separate "Sunday Saver" initiative this spring. The program will feature four "free electricity" Sundays during which customers can accumulate up to 64 hours of complimentary power over the coming month.
This offer requires households to reduce their energy consumption during peak weekday periods, typically between 4pm and 7pm when grid pressure is greatest. Participants in the April challenge can then claim their rewards on April 19 and 26, plus May 3 and 10, essentially operating high-energy appliances at no cost during these designated periods.
Both initiatives represent EDF's commitment to innovative energy solutions that benefit consumers while supporting broader environmental and infrastructure goals. By flexing their energy use through these programs, customers can significantly reduce their carbon footprint while enjoying financial savings on their electricity bills.
