Labour Revises 2030 EV Forecasts as Uptake Falls Short

Labour Government Adjusts Electric Vehicle Projections for 2030

The Department for Transport has officially revised its forecasts for electric vehicle usage on UK roads by 2030, acknowledging that uptake is progressing slower than earlier predictions had indicated.

Updated Modelling Reveals Slower Adoption Rates

New departmental modelling shows that electric car adoption over the coming decade is expected to fall short of previous estimates. According to the revised projections, electric cars are now anticipated to account for 29.6 per cent of total vehicle kilometres by 2030, while Light Goods Vehicles are projected to reach approximately 21 per cent.

The department stated that these changes reflect updated evidence and policy assumptions, with revisions based on "new historic data" and "updated modelling for the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate."

Significant Percentage Point Reductions

The revision means electric driving is now forecast to be roughly four percentage points lower for cars and just over four percentage points lower for vans in 2030 compared with previous government forecasts.

Officials noted that plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are completing a smaller proportion of their journeys in electric mode than previously assumed, contributing to the adjusted projections.

Government Commitment to Transition Remains

Heidi Alexander MP, Labour Party Secretary of State for Transport, emphasized the government's continued commitment to the electric vehicle transition. "We will continue to work in partnership both with industry and with governments across the UK to ensure that our domestic industry continues to thrive as we progress through this transition," she stated.

Alexander added: "From 2035, all new cars and vans will be zero emission, and everything we do must now support manufacturers in reaching that end point."

Amendments to Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate

The government response suggests several amendments to the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate, which has been described as "the world's most ambitious decarbonisation measure of its kind."

While technical in nature, these amendments are expected to have significant impact on manufacturers' ability to decarbonise sustainably. The changes aim to provide short-term flexibility to ensure jobs and investment remain in the UK during the pivot toward electric vehicles.

Alexander concluded: "To ensure that our Growth and Clean Energy missions progress in tandem as we build, sell, and ultimately drive zero emission vehicles; and to ensure that we lead the UK, and that the UK leads the world, as we step into a cleaner future."
