MG Makes Bold Return to Premium Sector with Electric SUV

MG is strengthening its position in the UK automotive market by re-entering the premium sector with its latest electric vehicle offerings. The brand, which has seen significant growth in recent years, is now targeting higher-end consumers with models from its '6' range, including variants priced over £40,000 that incur the £410 annual Expensive Car Supplement on road tax.

Introducing the MGS6 EV: A High-Tech Powerhouse

The MGS6 EV exemplifies this shift, featuring a large SUV design with distinctive styling and a 77kWh battery providing an excellent range. This top-tier model, available in SE and Trophy trims, is priced at just under £44,000 for the twin-motor version. It delivers exhilarating performance, with dual motors producing 361bhp to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in five seconds, alongside a claimed maximum range of 329 miles.

Beyond performance, the vehicle boasts a sleek, sporty exterior with aerodynamic elements like an active grille shutter, ultra-slim headlights, and aero wheel covers that add nearly 30 miles of range. A full-length panoramic roof, rear light bar, and 20-inch alloy wheels enhance its premium appearance.

Interior and Technology Features

Inside, the MGS6 offers a high-end feel with ambient lighting, powered and heated suede-style seats, and a floating centre console. Technology is dominated by a 12.8-inch HD touchscreen and a 10.25-inch driver display, controlling infotainment, navigation, and apps. Additional features include a Head-Up Display and a 360° HD Surround View Camera.

However, the touchscreen interface is not without flaws, as some functions are not intuitively displayed. The MG Pilot Safety Suite, which manages driver assistance systems like Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist, can be distracting due to constant alerts that are difficult to disable, such as the overspeed limit warning.

To mitigate distractions, physical controls remain on the multi-function steering wheel. Overall, the interior provides ample head and legroom, with the panoramic roof and ambient lighting creating a pleasant environment for occupants.

On-Road Performance and Practicality

On the road, the MGS6 combines blistering acceleration with decent handling for an SUV, exhibiting minimal body lean in corners despite a soft ride. Real-world range is impressive, with an estimated 270 miles against a WLTP figure of 301 miles for this model. Drivers can customize the experience with five drive modes and a one-pedal driving option.

Practicality is a key strength, offering a class-leading 674-litre boot expandable to 1,910 litres with seats folded, plus a 124-litre front 'frunk'. A Vehicle-to-Load function allows powering household items like grills or kettles. Charging, however, is slower than some competitors, taking about 38 minutes for a 10% to 80% charge using a 150kW DC fast charger.

Verdict and Specifications

The MGS6 EV represents a fine blend of style, space, performance, and practicality, proving MG can compete in the premium segment. Potential buyers should be prepared to manage the sometimes intrusive safety alerts.
