UK Electric Vehicles Surpass 2 Million for First Time

The number of electric vehicles (EVs) on UK roads has surpassed two million for the first time, according to new figures from the Department for Transport (DfT). As of December 2025, 2,012,000 EVs were licensed for use in the UK, marking a significant milestone in the country's transition to cleaner transportation.

Rapid Growth in EV Adoption

RAC senior policy officer Rod Dennis highlighted the accelerated pace of adoption: "It took around 14 years for a million battery-electric vehicles to be on UK roads, so for this figure to double in just a further two is impressive." He attributed the growth to wider availability of EVs in both new and used car markets, the electric car grant, and high fuel prices that incentivize switching to electric.

Challenges Remain

Despite the progress, Dennis noted that drivers who cannot charge at home or frequently travel beyond their EV's range still face high costs at public chargers. He suggested reducing VAT on public charging to match domestic electricity rates as a sensible next step to boost uptake further.

Surge in Demand

Octopus Electric Vehicles reported a 177% year-on-year increase in demand for EVs. Fuel costs have climbed sharply, with petrol and diesel prices at 158.31p and 191.54p per litre, respectively. Gurjeet Grewal, CEO of Octopus Electric Vehicles, said: "We're in the middle of an EV demand boom in the UK, and it's clearly not just new cars that people are after."

Market Impact

Iain Reid, Content Director at Carwow, noted that inflation rising to 3.3% and fuel price hikes—up 8.6p per litre for petrol and 17.6p for diesel in a month—are driving motorists to consider EVs. "We're seeing the real-world impact too: EV enquiries on Carwow surged 23% in March, and are up a further 14% again this month as drivers look to escape volatile pump prices," he said, adding that rising costs have even been linked to a surge in fuel theft.
