Volvo's UK Electric Car Recall Sees Minimal Repairs After Four Months

Swedish automotive giant Volvo has issued a stark warning to more than 10,000 drivers in the United Kingdom, advising them to park their electric vehicles outside and away from their homes for a period of four months. This precautionary measure follows a global recall initiated due to serious safety concerns with specific models.

Despite the large-scale recall, fewer than ten cars have actually been repaired in the UK since the action began. The recall affects Volvo EX30 Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance models manufactured between 2024 and 2026.

Battery Overheating Risk Identified

Volvo identified a critical issue with high-voltage battery cells sourced from one of its suppliers. These cells can overheat when charged to high levels, potentially leading to a fire within the battery pack. The company has stated that an overheating warning may appear on the vehicle's digital dashboard display.

In such an event, drivers are instructed to stop the car immediately and evacuate. A spokesperson for Volvo UK emphasized, "Safety is a top priority for Volvo Cars, and while the number of reported incidents is very small – representing around 0.02% of the cars we have identified as potentially affected – and we have no reports of related personal injuries, we are treating it very seriously."

Slow Repair Progress and Customer Frustration

According to reports from AutoExpress, insiders at Volvo have confirmed that fewer than ten vehicles have received replacement batteries more than four months after the recall was announced. The manufacturer acknowledged that availability of parts has been limited initially, but expects repair rates to increase in the coming weeks.

This delay has sparked significant frustration among affected customers. One Reddit user, while praising the EX30 as a "cracking car," criticized Volvo's aftersales service, stating, "For a brand that likes to present itself as premium, the standard here is frankly unacceptable." The user expressed concern that such service issues could hinder the brand's ability to sell vehicles in the future.

Ongoing Safety Instructions for Drivers

Until inspections and necessary repairs are completed, Volvo has issued specific guidelines for owners of the affected models:

  • Avoid charging the vehicle beyond 70% capacity.
  • Park the car outside and away from structures, such as houses or garages.
  • Remain vigilant for any overheating warnings on the dashboard.

The recall is part of a broader global action by Volvo to address the battery cell defect. The company continues to work on ramping up repair operations to resolve the safety issue for all impacted drivers in the UK and worldwide.
