Major A1(M) Motorway Expansion Near Leeds Imposes 50mph Limit Until August
Drivers on a key motorway in England are set to encounter significant disruptions as a major expansion project gets underway. The A1(M) between junctions 43 and 44, a busy stretch near Leeds, will be subject to a reduced 50mph speed limit and several overnight closures until August.
Project Details and Timeline
National Highways has confirmed that work begins this week to add a fifth lane to this mile-long section of the A1(M). The project aims to ease congestion and improve safety by widening the road, with completion expected in August. According to Simon Taylor, Project Manager at National Highways, the extra lane will help reduce weaving between junctions and alleviate traffic around these busy areas.
"We see many vehicles weaving between the junctions, and this extra lane will help reduce congestion around these busy junctions," Taylor stated. "By using the space, we can avoid impacting the verge and wooded cutting, which acts as a buffer for residents in Aberford."
Overnight Closures and Diversions
Motorists should prepare for a series of planned overnight closures as part of the project. These closures will occur between 8pm and 6am on specific dates, starting with April 8, 9, and 10. A clearly signed diversion will be in place for all closures, and an environmental weight limit through Aberford will also apply during these times.
Further closures will be necessary later in the project for gantry work, resurfacing, and removal of traffic management. National Highways will share exact dates once they are confirmed. The agency has warned that closures generally run from 8pm to 6am, but travellers in the early morning should note that their routes may be impacted by closures starting the evening before.
Impact on Drivers and Future Benefits
While the temporary 50mph speed limit and closures may cause delays, National Highways asserts that the upgrade will ultimately make journeys smoother, safer, and quieter for drivers. The project is part of broader efforts to enhance the motorway network in the region, with similar closures also planned for the A1(M) between junctions 42 and 44 and the M1 between junctions 46 and 48 on specified dates in March and April.
Drivers are advised to plan their trips accordingly and stay updated on closure schedules to minimise inconvenience during this essential infrastructure improvement.
