UK's Least Reliable Cars Revealed: Drivers Face £8,000 Repair Bills
Drivers Warned of £8,000 Bills from Unreliable Cars

New research has exposed the least dependable cars on British roads, with drivers of certain popular models facing potential repair bills of up to £8,000. The findings serve as a stark warning for thousands of motorists about the financial risks of owning an unreliable vehicle.

Premium Brands Dominate Unreliable List

The MotorEasy Reliability Index, published on 21 December 2025, analysed real-world claims data to rank vehicle dependability. In a surprising revelation, eight out of the ten least reliable models were found to be from premium or luxury brands.

Duncan McClure Fisher, founder of MotorEasy, emphasised the importance of the data for consumers. "With repair costs rising and vehicle technology becoming ever more complex, understanding real-world reliability has never been more important for UK drivers," he stated.

The index is designed to help motorists make informed decisions, not just about purchases, but also about how to protect themselves from unexpectedly costly garage visits.

Shocking Repair Costs and Low Scores

The study highlighted extreme examples of financial pain for owners. Most notably, one driver of a Citroën C4 reported needing a new gearbox, with the repair setting them back a staggering £8,000.

At the very bottom of the Reliability Index, behind 349 other vehicles, was the Tesla Model X. It received a dismal score of just one out of ten for both dependability and repair affordability.

The brands featuring in the ten least reliable cars included:

  • Tesla
  • Mercedes-Benz
  • Citroën
  • Audi
  • Land Rover
  • Volkswagen
  • Porsche

How Reliability is Calculated and What to Buy

MotorEasy explained that their scores are calculated using genuine owner claims data. By evaluating the frequency of repairs, average costs, and the most common mechanical issues, they build a comprehensive picture of a model's long-term dependability.

"Whether you're purchasing a new or used car, checking the reliability index for cars can save you from unexpected repair bills," a spokesperson advised.

In contrast to the poor performers, the index also identified the top ten most reliable models, offering a guide for buyers seeking peace of mind. The most dependable cars were found to be:

  1. Toyota Previa
  2. Seat Arona
  3. Skoda Citigo
  4. Kia Niro
  5. Toyota C-HR
  6. Kia Soul
  7. Lexus CT
  8. Fiat Tipo
  9. Suzuki Vitara
  10. Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

The full list of the least reliable cars, according to the MotorEasy Reliability Index, is:

  5. Land Rover Range Rover Sport
  6. Volkswagen Caravelle
