A major alert has been issued for drivers in the South East as a crucial stretch of the M20 motorway in Kent prepares to shut down imminently. This busy route, which typically carries around 130,000 vehicles every single day, will be partially closed overnight, causing expected widespread disruption for motorists and local traffic.
Details of the M20 Closure in Kent
The specific closure affects the eastbound carriageway of the M20, with the focus on the exit slip road at Junction 11A, which serves as the Eurotunnel exit. This vital slip road will be fully closed to all traffic from 6:00 pm on Saturday, 24th January, through to 4:00 am on Sunday, 25th January 2026.
National Highways has confirmed that this overnight shutdown is necessary to facilitate essential construction works. Motorists are being strongly advised to plan their journeys carefully, setting off earlier than usual to account for potential delays.
Diversion Routes and Expected Congestion
Official diversion routes will be in place to guide traffic around the closed section. However, authorities are warning that these diversions are likely to lead to increased congestion and possible queues on roads in and around the Folkestone area. The diverted traffic flow could significantly impact local routes, so drivers should exercise patience and allow extra travel time.
Additional Overnight Road Closures Across the Region
In a separate but concurrent development, the A21 will also face closures. It will be shut in both directions between Junction Road and the A28 from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am. This closure is to allow for essential works being carried out by East Sussex County Council.
Furthermore, the Dartford Crossing will experience overnight restrictions. The QEII Bridge will be closed from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am for scheduled maintenance. During this period, southbound traffic on the M25/A282 will be diverted via the east tunnel of the Dartford Crossing.
Important height restrictions will also be in effect at the Dartford Crossing. There will be no northbound access over the crossing for any vehicle exceeding 4.8 metres in height. Vehicles measuring between 4.8 metres (15 feet 9 inches) and 5.0 metres (16 feet 6 inches) will be diverted via the M25 in a clockwise direction.
These combined closures underscore a night of significant planned disruption for road users in the South East. Drivers are urged to check the latest travel updates from National Highways and local authorities before embarking on any journeys this weekend.
