M27 50mph Speed Limit Extended for Another Month

A major motorway in England has had its speed limit cut to 50mph for another month, putting millions of drivers at risk of a £1,000 fine. The M27, used by 120,000 vehicles daily, now carries a reduced limit as National Highways continues testing safety technology.

Why the Limit is in Place

National Highways stated that the 50mph limit on the M27 will remain for another month due to ongoing tests on Stopped Vehicle Detection systems. A spokesperson explained: "The technology being tested is our Stopped Vehicle Detection systems, which we have to rigorously test before they go live to ensure they meet our high-performance specification. This includes recording the road layout, which can only be completed once roadworks have been removed, and training the radar to reliably spot stopped vehicles and not create false alarms for reflections, signage and other factors."

Despite work crews leaving the road from April 22, the highway authority needs two more months of 50mph limits. National Highways added: "We're in the final phase of our scheme. We expect to restore the 70mph speed limit on this stretch of the M27 in late June."
