The UK Foreign Office has issued travel warnings for four countries amid the threat of an imminent storm. The Foreign Office has shared guidance for Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.
It shared the “addition of information about Tropical Storm Cristina” on Tuesday, June 9. It warned: “Tropical Storm Cristina is forecast to move along the Pacific coastline of Honduras over the next few days. This is likely to lead to heavy rainfall, which could cause life threatening flash floods and landslides. Follow and monitor local and international weather updates from the US National Hurricane Center and follow the advice of local authorities. See Extreme weather and natural disasters.”
The update for Mexico, meanwhile, related to the impending FIFA World Cup. It warned: "Since the beginning of June, protests by workers’ unions have caused disruption in Mexico City by intermittently closing off areas near the historic centre (the Zócolo and surrounding streets). Protests have also caused sporadic disruption to traffic, including temporarily closing arterial roads such as Paseo de la Reforma, Periférico Sur and Circuito Interior, as well as briefly blocking access to the airport (AICM). These protests are generally peaceful, but some have resulted in clashes with police, as well as an increased security presence around affected areas. It is illegal for foreign nationals to participate in political activities in Mexico. If you join demonstrations, the Mexican authorities may detain and deport you. If you come across protests, move away from the area. Monitor local media to understand possible disruption to your travel and plan extra time for your journeys."
Tropical Storm Cristina has been moving near the Nicaragua coast and will bring impacts across Central America and Mexico through the end of the week. "Flash flooding and mudslides from locally excessive rainfall are the main threats from Boris and Cristina," AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said. "The center of Boris is poorly defined because most of its thunderstorm activity is displaced by wind shear," DaSilva added. With Boris over land now in Mexico, it will lose wind intensity, but the tropical rainstorm will still funnel abundant moisture into southern Mexico. The AccuWeather RealImpact Scale for Boris is less than 1. "Proximity to the coast and wind shear could be inhibiting factors to major or rapid strengthening," DaSilva explained. "But, if Cristina could avoid landfall long enough, it could ramp up and become a hurricane."
