These penalties come as Birmingham City Council has announced plans to make 20mph speed limits standard on most residential roads across the city. The lower limits have either been ignored by drivers or caught them off guard, as many motorists automatically assume residential roads are 30mph.
Speed camera and police data reveals scale of offences
According to the data, almost 100,000 offences were recorded for speeding between 30 and 40mph so far this year. This serves as a stark warning to drivers as much of the city transitions to 20mph, suggesting that huge numbers could face punishment in the future.
The figures were obtained through a Freedom of Information request by BirminghamLive, which highlighted the speeds at which drivers were penalised after being caught by speed cameras or police officers. The data underscores the importance of checking for signage, particularly around schools and on tight, cramped residential streets.
Council confirms gradual rollout of 20mph limits
Council bosses have stated that 20mph limits will "continue to be implemented as part of a gradual rollout." This will not include busier main roads, most of which were recently reduced to 30mph in Birmingham.
In its blueprint for the future, the city council said: "Walking and cycling will become how most people get around their locality most of the time. Cars will no longer dominate street life around homes and schools."
Drivers warned as more roads convert to 20mph
The council added: "A limit of 20mph will be standard on all local roads. Residential neighbourhoods and local centres will be places where people are put first."
