Clarkson gets boost in Diddly Squat car park bid

Jeremy Clarkson has received a significant boost in his efforts to extend the temporary car park at Diddly Squat Farm until 2030, as Oxfordshire County Council has raised no objection to the proposal. The ongoing success of the Amazon Prime series Clarkson's Farm, recently commissioned for a sixth series, has driven high visitor numbers to the site in Chadlington, Chipping Norton, prompting the need for longer-term parking solutions.

Background of the Parking Dispute

Clarkson has been engaged in a lengthy battle with West Oxfordshire District Council over parking at the farm. Following an appeal in June 2023, he was granted permission to operate a temporary car park on land previously used for agriculture. However, the permission came with a condition requiring the land to be restored to its original state within three years.

Given the sustained popularity of the farm and the show, Clarkson's team applied for planning permission to extend the deadline until the end of 2030. While the application is still under consideration, the highways authority has expressed support.

Highways Authority Backing

Oliver Eden, transport development lead for Oxfordshire County Council, stated: "The condition restricted the permission for a period of three years in order to balance the identified landscape harm and the need for operational car parking. The temporary permission was intended to cover the period of more intensive use of site that is largely associated with the additional demand generated by the related television series."

Eden added: "Oxfordshire County Council support the extension of the temporary permission as suggested to align with the expected ongoing demand associated with the television series schedule. The additional car parking is an important facility in accommodating car parking that would otherwise likely cause disruption and safety concerns on the adjacent highway."

Representatives' Arguments

Clarkson's representatives argued: "Season six has been commissioned and will air in summer 2027. Three further years to monitor and review thereafter seems appropriate." They emphasized that the site continues to attract sufficient customers to warrant additional parking, benefiting the farm shop, café, and other local businesses.

The representatives also noted that the dedicated parking has prevented highway parking issues: "The provision of the dedicated additional parking and careful monitoring by the applicants has also ensured that parking on the adjacent highway is precluded. The landscaping around the car park area has started to mature and assists in assimilating the site into the surrounding landscape and existing sylvan backdrop."

Next Steps

A final decision on the planning application will be made by West Oxfordshire District Council at a later date. The outcome will determine whether Clarkson can maintain the car park through the expected peak demand period linked to the television series.
