Morrisons confirms parking fines for overstaying shoppers

Morrisons has confirmed that motorists using its car parks could be handed a “parking charge notice” if they exceed the allocated time limit. The supermarket giant, which competes with Sainsbury's, Tesco and Asda, published a statement on its website outlining the policy for shoppers who overstay.

According to the statement, the charge applies when a customer goes over the time allowed at a store where parking is not free. The company said: “If there is a charge for parking at your local store and you go over the allocated time, you will receive a parking charge notice. The cost and time to pay can vary depending on who the charge has come from.”

Typical time limits and how enforcement works

StartRescue, a motoring assistance firm, previously explained that the vast majority of supermarket car parks have a maximum allowed stay, usually between one and three hours. Going over this limit could result in a fine, but the level of enforcement varies between locations. Drivers are advised to check the rules displayed on signs in the car park.

Some car parks are fitted with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems, which can alert wardens if a vehicle has overstayed the minimum parking period. StartRescue noted: “The vast majority of supermarket car parks have a maximum allowed stay - usually of between one and three hours.”

How to dispute a parking charge notice

Morrisons has set out a process for customers who wish to dispute a parking charge notice. The company said: “If you have received a parking charge notice that you are disputing, please contact our customer services team by completing the enquiry form below.” The retailer added that it will require the details on the notice and the receipt for the store visit to investigate the matter.

The company also clarified that free parking is offered at the majority of its stores, but time is limited for a maximum duration, which can differ depending on the store's location. Morrisons advised: “Please see the signs in the car parks for more information or speak to the staff in the store who will be more than happy to help.”

Impact on shoppers

The confirmation means that shoppers who exceed the time limit at Morrisons car parks could face additional costs, with the exact amount depending on the parking operator involved. The company's policy applies to stores where parking charges are in place, and the duration of free parking varies by location.

Drivers are encouraged to check the signage at their local store to understand the specific time limits and any associated charges. The retailer's customer services team remains the point of contact for those disputing a notice, provided they have the necessary documentation.
