Cornwall Council Seeks Public Views on Motorhome Parking Restrictions
Motorhome and campervan owners across England are facing potential new restrictions as Cornwall Council launches a significant public consultation on proposed parking measures. The local authority is considering implementing bans on overnight camping for these vehicles at several popular car park locations throughout the region.
Proposed Changes to Parking Regulations
The council has outlined a series of proposals that would significantly alter current parking arrangements. Under the new measures, overnight motorhome camping would be permitted only at specific designated locations, while being prohibited at dozens of other car parks that currently allow such use. This follows a previously successful trial conducted in the coastal town of Bude.
If approved, the new regulations would allow fully self-contained motorhomes to park overnight in ten additional car parks beyond the trial locations. However, this expansion comes with new restrictions elsewhere in the county's parking infrastructure.
Introduction of Parking Charges
Alongside the camping restrictions, Cornwall Council is proposing to introduce financial changes to their parking system. Several car parks that are currently free of charge could see a new £2 'all day' parking charge implemented. Additionally, some car parks that remain free during winter months may have charges introduced year-round.
Dan Rogerson, Cornwall Council cabinet member for transport, emphasised the balanced approach being considered: "We're considering a range of proposals to address requests from motorhome users, as well as safeguarding access to some of our public spaces and supporting traffic management."
Public Consultation Process
The council has opened a formal consultation period running until Wednesday, February 4, inviting residents, businesses, and visitors to share their perspectives. Rogerson particularly encouraged participation from residents who currently use free car parks due to limited parking availability near their homes.
The council stated: "These initiatives aim to ensure our parking assets are managed effectively and in alignment with wider traffic management objectives, including improving road safety, reducing congestion, and supporting sustainable transport."
Feedback gathered during the consultation period will directly influence how parking is managed across Cornwall's communities, balancing local needs with broader environmental and economic goals for the region.
