Birmingham's Cross City rail line was partially suspended today after a lorry smashed into a 14ft high bridge on Summer Road in Erdington, an incident that has become all too familiar for commuters and residents. The collision forced the suspension of train services between New Street and Lichfield, with passengers advised to use NX West Midlands bus services instead.
Bridge Struck Multiple Times in Recent Months
The 4.3-metre low bridge, which carries the Cross City Line over Summer Road, has been the scene of scores of crashes over the past year. According to reports, it was struck at least five times in just four months last year, highlighting a persistent problem that has drawn criticism from local campaigners and transport officials.
Transport for West Midlands confirmed the disruption in a post on X, stating: "Due to a lorry colliding with the rail bridge on Summer Road in #Erdington, CrossCity North train services are currently suspended. (New Street - Lichfield) Passengers can use their train ticket on NX Buses. @westmidrailway." West Midlands Roads added that Summer Road was completely blocked at the railway bridge as recovery operations took place.
Campaigner Calls for Action
Birmingham campaigner Reiss Omari expressed frustration on X, saying: "Are we waiting for this bridge to collapse before implementing a fix - clearly the signage and bright yellow hazards signs aren’t enough, the disruption this would cause to the Cross City line if the bridge ever collapsed would be insane." His comments reflect growing concern over the repeated incidents and the potential for a catastrophic failure.
Network Rail's Previous Warning
Previously, Martin Colmey, operations director for Network Rail’s Central route, had issued a strong warning to lorry drivers. He said: "There is no excuse for driving a lorry into a railway bridge. Our bridges are clearly marked, and lorry drivers should always know the height restrictions of their vehicles. To ignore both and bash a bridge, causing disruption to passengers and road users, is unforgivable." Despite such warnings, the bridge continues to be hit, raising questions about whether additional measures are needed.
Impact on Commuters and Traffic
The suspension of the Cross City Line caused significant disruption for passengers traveling between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield. Many were forced to seek alternative transport, with train tickets being accepted on NX West Midlands bus services. Road users also faced delays as Summer Road remained closed for recovery work. The incident underscores the vulnerability of infrastructure to repeated strikes and the need for enhanced safety measures.
