Herd of Cows Causes Major Disruption on Busy Railway Line

Thousands of train passengers experienced significant delays on Tuesday, June 30, after a herd of cows blocked one of the UK's busiest railway lines for more than four hours. The incident occurred on the West Coast Main Line between Lichfield Trent Valley and Rugeley Trent Valley in the Midlands, causing widespread cancellations and frustration among commuters.

Services Affected and Alternative Arrangements

National Rail Enquiries reported that the line was blocked from 8:57 am, affecting Avanti West Coast and Lumo services between London Euston and Scotland, as well as London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Railway services. Passengers were warned to expect disruption until 4 pm, with tickets being accepted on certain alternative routes and road transport provided.

Difficulties Contacting Farmer

The Press Association understood that rail staff struggled to contact the farmer responsible for the animals, prolonging the delays. Many passengers took to social media to express their frustration. One Avanti West Coast passenger said they were stuck on a train that had “not moved for three hours,” while another complained about receiving only one 330ml bottle of water, adding: “I’m sure your shop is doing great business.” Another stranded passenger asked: “How long will these delays last?” and “How long does it take to move cows off the line?”

Network Rail Response

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “At around 9am we received a report of cows on the line near Armitage, between Lichfield and Rugeley. This resulted in some train services through the area being delayed and disrupted. Our teams attended the scene and, with assistance from farmers, were able to resolve the situation around 1pm. Normal working will now resume. We are sorry to those affected by this disruption.”
