Drivers face being hit with six penalty points on their licence for using mobile phones while driving, a law that is frequently broken on UK roads every day. This comes as new artificial intelligence cameras are being deployed across the country, increasing the likelihood that law-breaking motorists will be caught.
Widespread Misunderstanding of Phone Rules
Research indicates that many drivers are uncertain about the latest mobile phone regulations. While most people know they should not make calls or send texts while driving, there is less clarity about other phone-related activities. The rules state that motorists must not touch their phones in any way while driving, even when stationary in traffic. This includes using sat navs, checking messages, scrolling social media, or changing music.
Despite these regulations, it is common to see drivers looking down at their phones, and the laws are routinely ignored. Anyone caught can receive six penalty points and a heavy fine. Drivers are often caught out regarding sat nav rules; if devices are used for navigation, they should be set up and placed in a secure holder before the journey begins. Many drivers hold their phones while using them for navigation, which is not allowed.
AI Cameras to Catch Offenders
New AI cameras are initially being trialled in Scotland but could eventually be rolled out more widely across the UK. These cameras are designed to detect drivers using their phones, making enforcement much stricter. Greg Wilson, motoring expert at Quotezone.co.uk, said: “Using a mobile phone while driving remains one of the most dangerous distractions on the road, yet research shows many drivers are still guilty of quick checks. With AI cameras being tested to detect offenders, motorists should expect enforcement to become much stricter in the coming years.”
Matt Crole-Rees, car insurance expert at Confused.com, added: “Many drivers rely on their phones for navigation, but it's important to remember that using a handheld device while driving is illegal, even if it's only to check directions or enter a destination into a sat nav app.”
Impact on Drivers
The introduction of AI cameras means that drivers who break the law are more likely to be caught and penalised. Six penalty points can have serious consequences, including increased insurance premiums and, for new drivers, the risk of losing their licence. Motorists are urged to familiarise themselves with the rules and avoid any phone use while driving to prevent accidents and penalties.
