Lane Closures and Delays on West Midlands Motorway This Week
Lane Closures and Delays on West Midlands Motorway

Drivers are being warned of lane closures and delays on the M6 motorway in the West Midlands this week as a result of multiple incidents and ongoing roadworks. The affected stretch runs between junctions 7 and 10 near Birmingham, where National Highways has reported a series of disruptions.

Incidents and Roadworks Cause Disruption

National Highways confirmed that a vehicle fire on the M6 southbound near junction 8 led to the closure of two lanes earlier this week, causing significant delays of up to 45 minutes. Emergency services attended the scene, and the lanes have since reopened, but residual congestion is expected.

Additionally, planned roadworks for the Smart Motorway upgrade between junctions 7 and 9 have resulted in overnight lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 50mph. These works are scheduled to continue through the week, with closures in place from 8pm to 6am each night.

Impact on Travel

According to National Highways, drivers should expect delays of up to 20 minutes during peak hours, particularly on the M6 southbound. The agency advises motorists to allow extra journey time and consider using alternative routes such as the A38(M) or the M5 to avoid congestion.

“We urge drivers to plan ahead and check traffic updates before setting out,” said a National Highways spokesperson. “Our teams are working hard to minimize disruption, but delays are inevitable during these essential works.”

Advice for Motorists

Drivers are reminded to obey temporary speed limits and lane closures for their safety and that of road workers. Real-time traffic information is available via the National Highways website and mobile apps. For those traveling through the area, allowing extra time or using public transport may be advisable.
