Birmingham New Street Train Services Face Major Disruption After Tree Blocks Line

Passengers travelling to and from Birmingham New Street have been warned of significant disruption due to a blocked railway line. Strong winds overnight brought down a tree onto the tracks in Penkridge, affecting services on the critical West Coast Main Line.

Services Suspended and Altered

This incident has suspended all services between Wolverhampton and Stafford. While this section is several stops from Birmingham, it will impact passengers travelling north to cities like Manchester and Liverpool, as those trains typically pass through Wolverhampton and Stafford.

A spokesperson for Network Rail stated: "If you're travelling with Avanti West Coast, Caledonian Sleeper, Cross Country or London North Western Railway between Stafford and Wolverhampton, your train will be cancelled, revised or diverted."

Damage and Ongoing Repairs

The fallen tree has caused damage to the overhead lines, complicating repair efforts. Martin Colmey, operations director for Network Rail Central, explained: "Strong winds overnight brought down a tree in the Penkridge area which has unfortunately damaged the overhead wires. Our teams are working as quickly as possible to assess the extent of the damage and make the necessary repairs."

Disruption is expected to continue throughout the day on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. Passengers are strongly urged to check their journey plans and consider alternative travel arrangements where possible.

Alternative Travel Options

To mitigate the impact, replacement buses are currently being deployed for passengers between Wolverhampton and Stafford. Network Rail advises travellers to stay updated on service changes and allow extra time for their journeys.

This disruption highlights the vulnerability of rail infrastructure to severe weather conditions and the importance of prompt response efforts to restore normal operations.
