Metro Passengers Warned After Object Stuck Under Tram

Passengers on the West Midlands Metro have been warned to remain vigilant after an object became lodged under a tram on the line between Birmingham and Wolverhampton, causing significant delays on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred near the Priestfield stop, disrupting services for over an hour and affecting hundreds of commuters.

What Happened

According to Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), the object—believed to be a discarded bicycle—became trapped under the tram shortly after 3:30 pm. The driver reported a loud noise and immediately halted the service. Engineers were dispatched to remove the obstruction, leading to delays of up to 45 minutes on the route. A spokesperson for TfWM said, “We urge passengers to ensure no items are left near tracks or platforms, as they can cause serious disruption and safety risks.”

Impact on Services

The disruption affected both directions of the line, with trams terminating at earlier stops. Replacement bus services were arranged, but passengers reported long waits. The service resumed fully by 5:15 pm. Laura Jenkins, a passenger traveling to Wolverhampton, said, “I was stuck for almost an hour without any clear information. It was frustrating, but I’m glad no one was hurt.” TfWM confirmed that the tram involved was taken out of service for inspection.

Safety Warnings

TfWM has reiterated safety guidelines, reminding the public that objects left near tram lines can create serious hazards. “Even small items can cause a tram to derail or stop, risking safety and causing delays. We encourage the public to report any obstructions immediately,” the spokesperson added. Statistics show that similar incidents, often involving debris or misplaced objects, have occurred 12 times in the past year on the network.

Longer-Term Measures

In response, TfWM is reviewing measures to reduce such incidents, including increased surveillance and public awareness campaigns. Regular inspections of tracks and platforms are also being intensified. Passengers are advised to check the TfWM website or app for real-time updates before traveling.
