Solihull Station Locked: Morning Commute Chaos as Trains Skip Stop
Solihull station locked, trains unable to stop

Early morning rail commuters in Solihull faced significant disruption on Monday, December 1, after the town's railway station was unexpectedly locked shut.

Station Declared 'Locked', Services Diverted

Shortly before 6am, West Midlands Railway (WMR) issued an urgent warning to passengers. They stated that Solihull station was "locked" and that all services were "unable to call" at the location. The operator cited a lack of available station staff as the reason for the closure, which was said to be in effect "until further notice".

The sudden closure meant that no train services could stop to pick up or drop off passengers. WMR immediately advised travellers to use alternative stations on the same line, specifically naming Widney Manor and Olton. They highlighted that free parking was available at these alternative stops to help mitigate the inconvenience for drivers.

Swift Reopening Eases Commuter Concerns

However, the disruption lasted for less than half an hour. In a follow-up update issued before 6:30am, WMR announced that the situation had been resolved. A spokesperson confirmed that Solihull station would reopen from 6.15am.

The first West Midlands Railway services scheduled to stop at the station after reopening were identified as the 6.39am service to Dorridge and the 6.41am service to Worcester Foregate Street via Birmingham. Despite the swift resolution, passengers were reminded to plan their journeys ahead by checking the status of their specific train service.

Importance of Contingency Planning

This early-morning incident underscores the fragility of rail services when key staffing issues arise. While the closure was brief, it occurred during a critical peak period for weekday commuters. The event highlights the importance for regular travellers to:

  • Stay updated with real-time travel alerts from their train operator.
  • Be aware of alternative stations and transport routes on their regular journey.
  • Allow extra time for their commute when unexpected disruptions are announced.

West Midlands Railway has not provided further details on the specific cause of the staff shortage that led to the station being locked.
