AA Warns UK Drivers of Unexpected £160 Pothole Tyre Charge

The AA has issued a stark warning to UK drivers about the financial risks posed by potholes, with nearly half confessing they are unprepared for an unexpected hit to their wallets. Edmund King, president of the AA, emphasised that motorists should not underestimate the critical role of their tyres in vehicle safety.

He stated: "Tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, so keeping them in good condition is vital for braking, handling and overall safety. With pothole damage and rising replacement costs catching many drivers off guard, it's more important than ever to check tyres regularly and understand the options available." King noted that some drivers are now exploring tyre insurance policies to shield their household finances from unforeseen repair expenses.

Survey Reveals Widespread Unpreparedness

An AA survey of over 13,000 drivers uncovered alarming gaps in readiness and knowledge. Fewer than half, specifically 48 per cent, felt financially prepared to cover an unexpected tyre replacement. Knowledge about tyre types and pricing was also lacking, with only 16 per cent of drivers aware of the cost of a premium tyre, compared to 42 per cent who knew the price for mid-range options.

Just 34 per cent said they understood the differences between premium and budget tyres, highlighting a significant need for better education among motorists.

Cost Breakdown and Safety Advice

According to AA figures, tyre replacement costs vary widely:

  • Premium tyre fixes cost around £160 (for size 205/55 R16)
  • Mid-range tyres set drivers back approximately £75
  • Budget tyres are priced at about £50
  • Run-flat tyres come in at around £125

The roadside recovery group stressed that even premium tyres can fail to perform adequately if they are deteriorated or improperly inflated. The AA advises drivers to select tyres based on driving habits, vehicle type, and typical road conditions, rather than focusing solely on cost.

Regular inspections of tread depth, pressure, and overall condition are deemed essential for safety, regardless of tyre type or price point. This proactive approach can help mitigate the impact of pothole damage and other road hazards.
