Temporary traffic lights at a busy Halesowen junction are set to be removed by Friday, May 16, 2025, bringing relief to motorists after weeks of disruption. The signals were installed on March 24, 2025, at the junction of Manor Way and Mucklow Hill to facilitate emergency gas main repairs by Cadent Gas.
Emergency repairs cause delays
The works, which began in late March, have caused significant delays on this key route connecting Halesowen to the M5 motorway and surrounding areas. Cadent Gas stated that the repairs were necessary to address a gas leak and ensure the safety of the local gas network. The temporary traffic lights have been operating 24/7, with two-way traffic controlled manually during peak hours.
According to Cadent Gas, the project involves replacing a section of the ageing gas main. A spokesperson for the company said: "We understand the inconvenience these temporary lights have caused, and we are working as quickly and safely as possible to complete the repairs. We apologise for any disruption and thank residents and road users for their patience."
Timeline for removal
The traffic management measures are expected to be fully lifted by the end of the day on May 16, 2025, assuming no unforeseen complications arise. Cadent Gas has confirmed that the main repair work is nearing completion, and the final stages involve reinstating the road surface and removing the traffic light equipment.
Local councillors have been pressing for a swift resolution. Councillor for Halesowen North, Simon Phipps, said: "I have been in regular contact with Cadent Gas to ensure this work is completed on time. The delays have been frustrating for residents and commuters, and I welcome the news that the lights will soon be gone."

The junction is a critical link for local traffic, with an estimated 20,000 vehicles using it daily. During the roadworks, journey times have increased by up to 15 minutes during peak periods, according to data from West Midlands Traffic Information. Alternative routes via Hagley Road and Stourbridge Road have also seen increased congestion as drivers seek to avoid the area.
