Motorists are being warned to expect significant delays on the M6 southbound in the Black Country after two lanes were closed due to a broken down lorry.
The incident occurred between Junction 9 for Wednesbury and Junction 8 for the M5 interchange, causing congestion that has built up to six miles. National Highways West Midlands reported delays of approximately 40 minutes for drivers in the area.
Lane Closures and Congestion
In a statement on social media, a spokesperson for National Highways West Midlands confirmed: "Lanes 3 and 4 are closed on the M6 in the West Midlands between Junction 9 for Wednesbury and Junction 8 for the M5 Junction. This is due to a broken down lorry. Current delays of 40 minutes and six miles of congestion on approach."
Long queues could be seen building on the M6 southbound, with motorway cameras capturing the extent of the traffic. Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes where possible or allow extra time for their journeys.
Impact on Local Traffic
The breakdown is affecting traffic passing through Sandwell, with the closure of two lanes reducing capacity significantly. Recovery services are reportedly on the scene working to remove the lorry, but it remains unclear how long the disruption will last.
National Highways has urged motorists to approach the area with caution and to expect stop-start traffic conditions. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
