Birmingham Airport has confirmed that technical problems with its baggage handling system, which transports suitcases from check-in through security to aircraft, are still ongoing. This marks the fourth consecutive day of disruption, with the issues first emerging on Friday, August 7.
The malfunction has prevented numerous travelers from having their main bags loaded onto planes, leading to many passengers arriving at their holiday destinations without their luggage. This has cast a shadow over what should have been the start of relaxing getaways for many families.
Passengers report holiday nightmare
Among those affected is the Johnson family, who flew from BHX to Gran Canaria and landed without their belongings. They described the experience as a 'nightmare', arriving 'without clothes and vital medicines'. Their EasyJet flight saw dozens of suitcases fail to make it to the destination.
This story has been echoed by numerous other passengers who have taken off from Birmingham but landed without their cases. Many have also reported a lack of clear information about how they would be reunited with their belongings, and a perceived lack of compassion from staff, adding insult to the already frustrating situation.
Airport's response and ongoing issues
On Friday, August 7, Birmingham Airport posted on social media: “We are experiencing an issue with our baggage systems which is impacting some outbound luggage. Engineers are on site and working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. Terminal colleagues are also working hard to ensure baggage in terminal is being processed as quickly as possible. We expect this to cause inconvenience for some passengers, and we sincerely apologise for this. Those due to travel today, should still arrive at the airport in line with airline advice.”
Despite these assurances, the problems persisted throughout the weekend. On Sunday, the airport stated that 'the vast majority of baggage is travelling as planned with passengers', and that it was working with airlines to get bags to their owners 'as fast as possible'.
No end in sight as Monday arrives
As of Monday, August 10, no new updates have been posted on the airport's social media channels. However, when questioned by BirminghamLive, a spokeswoman confirmed that the issue is still ongoing, repeating Sunday's message.
The spokeswoman said: “Whilst issues are remaining, the vast majority of baggage is travelling as planned with passengers. We are working with our airlines and third parties to reunite luggage with passengers as fast as possible and we are sincerely sorry for the inconvenience and stress this has caused some of our passengers.”
The disruption comes during the peak summer holiday period, when Birmingham Airport handles a high volume of outbound travelers. The airport has not provided a timeline for when the technical issues will be fully resolved, leaving many passengers anxious about upcoming trips.
