MOT Failure Rates: The Best and Worst Cars Revealed

New analysis has pinpointed the specific car models across the UK that are most and least likely to pass their crucial MOT test, with one vehicle showing a staggeringly high failure rate.

The Worst Performers: Cars with the Highest MOT Fail Rates

Following an examination of almost 210,000 MOT failure results, using official data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the diesel-powered Peugeot 207 was identified as the car with the highest likelihood of failing its MOT. Its failure rate was a significant 34.71 per cent.

Close behind were the petrol version of the Peugeot 207, with a failure rate of 33.23 per cent, and the Peugeot 206 petrol model at 33.20 per cent. The analysis, conducted by MoneySuperMarket, also highlighted the Citroen DS3, which appeared twice in the top ten worst performers for both its diesel and petrol variants.

The full list of cars with the highest MOT fail rates is dominated by popular models, including the Fiat Punto, Renault Megane, and the Ford Fiesta diesel.

Expert Insight and a Solution for Drivers

Alicia Hempsted, a car insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, commented on the financial and practical headaches a failed MOT can cause. She stated, "Your car failing its MOT can be a frustrating and costly experience, especially as it voids your car's insurance."

To help motorists prepare, the company has launched a new tool. Ms Hempsted explained, "By analysing over 209 million MOT fail results, we've created a unique car MOT Fail Checker tool that helps drivers spot where the weaknesses for their specific car make and model may be." She added that the tool aims to help drivers "save money and stay safe on the road" by addressing issues like worn tyres or faulty handbrakes before the official test day.

The Best in Class: Cars with the Lowest MOT Fail Rates

At the other end of the spectrum, the data reveals the models that demonstrate exceptional reliability. The Porsche 911 (Petrol) boasts the lowest failure rate of all, at an impressive 4.43 per cent.

It is followed by a range of modern vehicles, including the Volkswagen T-Roc, the hybrid Toyota RAV4, and the Audi Q3. The list of most reliable cars also features the Ford Puma and models from Mercedes-Benz, showing that strong MOT performance is available across different brands and vehicle types.
