Toddler dies in A1 crash as broken-down car hit days before Christmas
Two-year-old killed in A1 collision in Cambridgeshire

A two-year-old boy has died in a tragic collision on the A1 in Cambridgeshire, just days before Christmas, after the broken-down car he was travelling in was struck by another vehicle.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway of the A1, shortly after the Stibbington Junction, at approximately 6:20 pm on Saturday evening. The young victim, a boy from London, was a passenger in a Toyota Auris that had broken down in a live lane. The stationary Toyota was then hit by a Volkswagen Touran.

Five other passengers inside the Toyota sustained serious injuries in the impact. All were taken to Peterborough City Hospital for emergency treatment following the devastating crash.

Driver Arrested and Released on Bail

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 64-year-old man from Peterborough, suffered only minor injuries. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

After being interviewed by police, the man has been released on bail until March 20, 2026. This extended bail period will allow investigators to conduct a thorough forensic examination of the crash scene and the vehicles involved.

Police Investigation and Witness Appeal

Specialist family liaison officers are now supporting the toddler's parents and relatives. Describing the event as a "tragedy," police said it has profoundly affected the local community.

Sergeant David McIlwhan, who is leading the investigation, has issued an urgent appeal for witnesses. Authorities are keen to speak to anyone who saw the collision itself, or the broken-down Toyota prior to the impact.

Police are also asking any motorists who were in the area at the time to check their dashcam footage. This evidence is considered crucial for piecing together the exact sequence of events on the busy dual carriageway.
