UK Drivers Slam 'Never More Dangerous' Roads as Pothole Crisis Worsens

Fuming drivers across the United Kingdom have overwhelmingly condemned the nation's escalating pothole problem, with a staggering 98 percent claiming that local streets are now in a severe state of disrepair. According to a comprehensive new survey, an alarming 90 percent of motorists report that their nearby roads have deteriorated significantly compared to just twelve months ago.

Survey Reveals Widespread Vehicle Damage and Safety Concerns

The survey, which polled 1,200 drivers, found that 73 percent of road users have experienced direct damage to their vehicles as a direct result of hitting potholes. Among classic car owners, the situation appears even more dire, with 93 percent expressing nervousness about driving their historic vehicles due to the perilous condition of the roads.

One frustrated driver remarked, "Roadworks are everywhere, and yet the roads are still worse than the lunar surface." Another professional driver added, "I am a professional driver for work. The roads have never been in such a dangerous state."

Motorcyclists and Long-Term Drivers Voice Unprecedented Fears

A keen motorcyclist with nearly five decades of riding experience shared, "I am a keen motorcyclist and fear for my physical safety for the first time this year, after riding for nearly 50 years. I will not ride in the UK until the roads are in a safer condition than they are now."

A third driver fumed, "I've never seen our roads in such a state. It doesn't matter if it's a country road or a carriageway. There are potholes everywhere, and clearly, it's not just one district."

Government Funding and Industry Response

The United Kingdom is estimated to have more than one million potholes, with these road defects ranking as one of the leading causes of car breakdowns nationwide. Currently, the Government has allocated a fund of £1.6 billion specifically to address this pressing issue until the end of 2026.

Mark Roper, managing director of Hagerty UK, stated, "Our survey shows that Britain's drivers are now fed up with the condition of our roads, with many expressing their frustrations in a very clear manner. Households are having to find money to fix damage to their cars, sometimes extensive and expensive. As a company who champions cars being used and cherished by enthusiasts, it's very concerning to hear that the state of disrepair is making owners nervous to even take their cars out."

The findings highlight a critical need for immediate action to improve road safety and infrastructure across the UK, as drivers continue to face mounting repair costs and heightened risks on their daily journeys.
