Reckless drivers have been caught reaching extreme speeds of up to 155mph on West Midlands roads over the past year, according to data released by West Midlands Police. The information, obtained through a freedom of information request by BirminghamLive, reveals that 14 cars were clocked at speeds exceeding 130mph since the start of last year.
Fastest Incident: Mercedes Hits 155mph in Sutton Coldfield
The most alarming case involved a Mercedes CLA45 AMG, which was recorded at 155mph in Sutton Coldfield in March 2025. This speed is more than double the national motorway limit of 70mph, highlighting a severe disregard for road safety. The incident underscores the dangers posed by such high-speed driving in residential and urban areas.
Motorways Bear the Brunt of Extreme Speeding
Most of these extreme speeds were captured on major motorways, including the M6 and M42, where speed cameras are operational. Notable incidents include:
- A BMW was caught at 151mph between junctions 4 and 5 of the M6.
- Two Audis were recorded at 143mph in separate incidents on the M42.
- Another BMW reached 141mph on the M42 motorway.
Additional serious cases involved a Skoda at 137mph and another BMW at 136mph on the M6. A Skoda was also spotted doing 130mph on the A452 Collector Road near Castle Bromwich in March 2025, indicating that reckless driving extends beyond motorways.

Despite being caught by speed cameras or police officers, most of these drivers managed to evade consequences, as tickets were cancelled for various reasons.
