A fresh 24-hour weather alert for ice has been issued for the West Midlands, as the region grapples with the aftermath of significant snowfall and ongoing freezing conditions.
Warning Details and Forecast
The Met Office yellow warning for ice came into effect at midday on Friday, January 9, and is scheduled to remain until midday on Saturday, January 10. This follows the more severe amber alert issued during Storm Goretti, which brought heavy snow across the Midlands.
In its latest forecast, the Met Office stated that Friday would be cloudy, cold, and wet with rain or sleet, occasionally turning to snow over hills, with travel disruption likely. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach around 5°C.
The forecast for tonight warns of isolated wintry showers, followed by a mainly dry but cold night with clear spells, bringing a risk of frost, ice, and patchy freezing fog. Temperatures could dip to a minimum of -1°C.
Widespread Disruption Across the Region
The heavy snowfall on Thursday night led to severe travel chaos on Friday morning. Numerous roads were left impassable, and train services in the Birmingham area were cancelled. The disruption was so extensive that it forced the closure of more than 100 schools across the region for the day.
Air travel was also heavily impacted, with reports of airport runway closures adding to the widespread transport woes.
Weekend Outlook and Beyond
Saturday is predicted to be a drier day for most, with sunny spells, though wintry showers remain possible, particularly in the northwest. It will continue to feel rather cold, with a maximum temperature again around 5°C.
Looking further ahead from Sunday to Tuesday, the Met Office indicates a mostly dry start on Sunday before rain, potentially preceded by hill snow, arrives later. The weather is then expected to turn milder but more unsettled, with heavy showers or longer spells of rain and becoming windy at times.
Residents across the West Midlands are urged to exercise caution, particularly on untreated surfaces, and to stay updated with the latest travel information and weather forecasts.
