A14 temporary speed limits and lay-by closures from August 2026
A14 speed limits and lay-by closures from August 2026

National Highways will introduce temporary speed limits and close lay-bys on the A14 between junction 33 (Milton Interchange) and junction 35 (Stow cum Quy Interchange) in Cambridgeshire to support resurfacing and maintenance works. The measures are scheduled to begin on or after Monday, August 24, 2026, and are expected to last for approximately four months.

Key temporary restrictions

The temporary restrictions include 50mph and 40mph speed limits, as well as lay-by closures, all operating 24 hours a day. The 50mph limits will apply eastbound from 150 metres east of the junction 33 Milton Interchange eastern overbridge for 950 metres, westbound from the junction 35 Stow cum Quy Interchange entry slip for 1500 metres, and on the eastbound entry slip at junction 33 Milton Interchange.

The 40mph limits will be in place eastbound from 1000 metres east of the junction 33 Milton Interchange eastern overbridge to the junction 34 Fen Ditton Interchange exit slip, and westbound from 1500 metres west of the junction 35 entry slip to 300 metres west of the junction 34 Fen Ditton Interchange westbound entry slip. All lay-bys adjacent to both carriageways between junctions 33 and 35 will be closed.

What works are planned?

The programme includes carriageway resurfacing, waterproofing, replacement of bridge expansion joints, installation of new communication ducting, new drainage, concrete crack sealing, installation of safety barriers, and renewal of road markings and studs. The works will take place along the A14 corridor between junction 33 Milton Interchange and junction 35 Stow cum Quy Interchange, including the approaches to junction 34 Fen Ditton Interchange, near the CB24 and CB25 areas.

National Highways expects the works to take approximately four months, but the traffic order allows for works to continue, if necessary, for up to 18 months. The works will operate 24 hours a day as required.

Diversion routes and exemptions

Diversion routes and traffic management will be clearly indicated by on-road signs when closures are active. Drivers should follow signed diversions and allow extra time for journeys between Milton and Stow cum Quy. The temporary speed limits will not apply to emergency service or special force vehicles, and lay-by closures will not apply to emergency service, traffic officer, works, or winter maintenance vehicles.
