Transport for London has announced a significant month-long closure of a major traffic artery in the capital, set to cause widespread disruption for tens of thousands of commuters and motorists. The A40 Westway, a crucial strategic route used by approximately 100,000 vehicles every single day, will be shut down from Friday, March 20, through to late April 2026.
Essential Safety Works to Impact Major Commuter Route
The full carriageway closure will affect the section between the A40 Westway Roundabout and the Marylebone flyover. This essential, safety-critical renewal work is described by transport authorities as vital for ensuring the infrastructure remains safe and operational for decades to come. A complete road closure will be enforced for the entire duration, with official diversion routes clearly signposted for affected drivers.
Widespread Travel Disruption Expected
The shutdown is anticipated to create considerable road chaos across west London. Transport for London is warning that local roads and the designated diversionary routes are likely to become extremely congested, leading to significant journey delays. In addition to the impact on private vehicles, the works will disrupt 33 separate bus routes, although detailed service alterations have not yet been published by TfL.
Stuart Harvey, Chief Capital Officer at Transport for London, stated: "The A40 is a key artery in west London and it’s vital that we ensure it is well maintained for the tens of thousands of people who use it each day. This essential work will allow the flyover to continue to be used safely for decades to come."
Official Advice for Commuters and Residents
TfL is strongly advising all road users to plan their journeys meticulously during this period. The official guidance includes:
- Planning ahead for any travel in the affected area.
- Considering alternative routes to avoid the closure zone.
- Exploring different modes of transport where feasible.
- Expecting delays and building extra time into travel schedules.
Harvey added: "I'd like to thank people in the area for their patience during these works and would encourage everyone to plan ahead for any journeys in the area, using alternative modes of transport where possible."
Traffic Management Strategy
To manage the expected congestion, Transport for London will implement a dynamic traffic-signal strategy across the surrounding road network. This system will be continually monitored and reviewed throughout the closure to optimise traffic flow as much as possible on alternative routes.
The specific works, labelled as Phase 3 of a larger project, will focus on replacing two critical expansion joints on the Marylebone flyover. This preventative maintenance is deemed essential for the long-term structural integrity and safety of one of London's busiest commuter corridors.
