Stratford Road in Birmingham has emerged as the city's new hotspot for parking fines, with nearly 8,000 penalty charge notices issued in the first five months of 2026. Exclusive figures obtained by BirminghamLive reveal that a staggering 7,884 parking tickets were handed out along this busy thoroughfare between January and May.
Breakdown of Fines
Of the total, over 5,000 fines were issued on the Sparkhill stretch of Stratford Road, while a further 2,775 were given in the Sparkbrook section. This makes Stratford Road the most ticketed road in Birmingham, overtaking the longstanding number one problem area, Alum Rock Road. The figures suggest an increased focus by traffic wardens or a worsening of parking issues in the area.
Common Parking Violations
Parking 'offenders' may have been penalized for parking on double yellow lines, failing to pay for parking, or overstaying their allotted time. Traffic wardens patrol the area daily, targeting rule-breakers.
Comparison with Other Roads
Alum Rock Road, which was previously the top hotspot, now ranks second with 4,744 penalty charge notices this year. Other roads with high numbers of fines include Washwood Heath Road (1,311), Gas Street (1,202), and Cornwall Street (1,114), according to freedom of information data from Birmingham City Council.
Why Stratford Road?
The A34 Stratford Road is one of the busiest in Birmingham, heading south through Sparkhill and Hall Green to Shirley. Parking issues are concentrated around the Sparkhill and Sparkbrook areas, which are lined with shops, businesses, and residential streets, leading to fierce competition for parking spaces.
