Road closures remain in place around Barr Beacon nature reserve in Great Barr following a devastating grassland fire on Sunday afternoon, with new images revealing the extent of the damage. The blaze, which broke out on August 2, tore through the reserve, blackening trees and bushes, and left a trail of scorched earth.
Fire crews battle significant blaze
West Midlands Fire Service deployed eight crews and around 40 firefighters to tackle the incident at Barr Beacon, one of the highest points in the West Midlands and home to a war memorial. The service described the fire as 'significant' and thanked the public for their understanding as crews worked to bring it to a safe conclusion.

Road closures and diversions
Walsall Council has confirmed that a series of road closures remain in place as fire crews continue to deal with the incident. The closures affect the following locations:
- Sutton Road / Beacon Hill / Beacon Road
- Pinfold Lane / Beacon Road
- Bridle Lane / Beacon Road
- Pinfold Lane / Bodens Lane
- Little Johnsons Lane / Beacon Road
- Bridle Lane / Doe Bank Lane
- Bridle Lane / Aldridge Road
A two-way diversion is in place via Beacon Hill, Aldridge Road and Queslett Road. The council stated that closure points will remain in place until at least 5pm today, with the possibility of extending beyond this time.
Two other park fires in Birmingham
Elsewhere in Birmingham, two additional fires broke out at city parks on the same day. At Perry Hall Playing Fields in Perry Barr, six crews attended the park via Perry Avenue. West Midlands Fire Service posted shortly after 1pm on Sunday, urging people to avoid the area where possible.
A reporter who attended the scene described the aftermath: "This morning, all that can be seen is scorched earth with birds picking amongst once was vegetation. Luckily no one was said to have been hurt. The park remains open as usual." Fire crews were expected to return during the day to check for hot spots and prevent reignition.
Another fire took hold at Kingfisher Park in Hay Mills, where flames were visible and smoke filled the air. That incident was reported to have been extinguished by Monday morning.

The fires have caused significant disruption to local traffic and have affected popular green spaces used by residents. The road closures around Barr Beacon are expected to remain in place for several hours, and residents are advised to plan alternative routes.
