Birmingham's Speeding Hotspot: Nearly 20,000 Drivers Caught in a Year
New figures have exposed Birmingham's worst speeding hotspot, where nearly 20,000 drivers were caught breaking speed limits in a single year. The A4540 New John Street West recorded the highest number of average speed camera violations across the city, highlighting a major traffic safety concern.
Staggering Violation Numbers on a Key Route
On the stretch between Lucas Circus and Hospital Street, a staggering 9,859 motorists were caught speeding. In the opposite direction, another 8,669 drivers were captured, bringing the total to over 18,500 violations on this single road. This route connects Lucas Circus to Dartmouth Circus and the Aston Expressway, north of the city centre, and sees thousands of vehicles daily, many traveling to and from the M6 motorway.
The data serves as a stark warning to drivers about the risks of ignoring speed limits, which can lead to fines and penalty points. Authorities are urging motorists to adhere to posted limits to enhance road safety.
Other Major Hotspots Identified
Another significant speeding location is Lee Bank Middleway/Belgrave Middleway, where 9,970 drivers were caught heading towards Haden Circus Roundabout. An additional 3,511 violations were recorded in the direction of Fiveways Island, indicating widespread issues across Birmingham's road network.
Council's Safety Crackdown Expands
These revelations come as Birmingham City Council intensifies its safety efforts by rolling out more average speed cameras on new routes. This initiative is part of a broader crackdown aimed at reducing speeding and improving overall traffic safety throughout the city.
The data was obtained by BirminghamLive through a freedom of information request to West Midlands Police, providing crucial insights into traffic enforcement patterns. As the council continues to implement these measures, drivers are reminded to stay vigilant and comply with speed regulations to avoid penalties and contribute to safer streets.
